Food Farm Truck
The Food Farm truck has arrived on the scene in San Diego and somehow managed to open without SDFT’s knowledge. This makes SDFT fretfully question their food truck omniscience. Enough about our injured self-esteem:

Food Farm currently lists 5 menu items on their website, including sliders, ginger chicken, orange salad, a “falafel dog”, and a grilled cheese. The grilled cheese is intruiging to me as it’s made with goat cheese, strawberries, and balsamic!
They are a family owned truck that serves lunches to San Diego locations between the hours of 11am-1pm, Tues-Fri. They also pride themselves in supporting local farmers and businesses.
The Gathering Spot Bistrotruck
This truck made it’s triumphant debut at the recent 57 Degrees Food Truck Extravaganza on April 15. Their menu for this event included items like the Trifecta Grilled Cheese Sandwich: gouda, cheddar and pepper jack served with a gazpacho shot; and churritos: churro bites tossed in cinammon and sugar topped with vanilla drizzle. Also mini tacos, sliders, truffle fries,a nd variations on hot dogs and brats.

San Diego Food Trucks (as in, me) was lucky enough to be interviewed along with Devilicious for Marissa Cabrera’s KBPS article, “Food-Truck Rush Sweeping San Diego“. There is also an audio clip on that page of her story that aired on KPBS.
We also did an interview on the air with Marissa and These Days host Maureen Cavanaugh as well as David Wasserman from Joes on the Nose drink truck. You can listen to the audio here. We discussed the growing food truck trend in our city, truck cleanliness, where trucks mostly park, and more.

I just came upon this post from the Food & Beverage Association of San Diego County that I thought you might find interesting.
“In January the F&BA along with the Health Dept and San Diego City BID Council conducted a Mobil Food Facility Carts/ Trucks Workshop to educate all interested parties about the who-what-when and where of operating these businesses. Current and future operators as well as restaurants and caters filled up the meeting room—information was shared—questions were answered with everyone gaining some useful knowledge!
“F&BA continuing to be Hospitality’s Go-To Source for answers we field many questions concerning Carts and Trucks among other questions—today a restaurant owner called just before noon—this big food truck has parked in front of my business, is selling sandwiches-cooking items and refuses to leave—Is this Legal-What can I do?
“The location in question is located in the city of San Diego and because their code (city of San Diego code section 54.0122) requires them to be at least 10 feet away from another vehicle, they needed to hit the road. Police were called and eventually they left. They are also required to be licensed with the Health Dept, and that sticker is to be in plan sight for inspection.
“That may not necessarily be the case across the county—each city has its own way of dealing with mobile food carts/trucks. Some like National City ban them all together while others take it case by case.”
Interesting stuff. I wonder why National City banned trucks?

The cover story in the recent San Diego Reader is titled, “I Like My Truck, But I Miss My Cart” and is a lengthy article with interviews from MIHO Gastrotruck, Tabe BBQ and Manny’s Taco truck.
Some observations and interesting points from the article:
The author, who is visiting Tabe as they are parked behind The Office bar in North Park, asks why they can’t park where the public can see them:
“I’ve been given a ticket for ‘selling on a public road.’ You’re not allowed to do that. You could be blocking a public right-of-way. That was $258, in Hillcrest. That scared me from parking near the city on the streets. But I don’t know why we should be hiding back here.”
Great quote from Tabe: “And, yet, we add life to the city. It should be welcoming us.””
It also tells the story of Manny’s Taco Truck. The owner (Manny, of course) apparently used to own a taco cart then the city told him he had to get a truck even though he didn’t want to. The cost of the truck and the difference in the work environment sound like they have been tough for him. The title of the article, ” “I Like My Truck, But I Miss My Cart” is his quote.
An interesting read.

Three new trucks are coming:

- The Gathering Spot (@tgsbistrotruck) will be debuting at the next 57 Degrees Truck Gathering in April. They will serve “fresh gourmet street foods” like tacos, street dogs, sliders, grilled cheese and fries.

They use only certified organic foods, buy locally grown ingredients when possible, and run their truck off of vegetable oil.
